I'm fairly certain he did more than upload an HTML page, there's probably at least 1 backdoor, probably more so that when he learns you've removed his page he still has access and will just put it back.

If you are sure the hacker (s), didn't steal any data, or placed malicious code in the site, then you may also suspect of an inside joke. If possible, check logs to find out the source of the connection.
